01The argument

Every chat app can send a link. This one can send the work.

One question — “where are we on the pricing page?” — asked in two places. On the left the answer is three links to three other products. On the right the answer is the task, the document and the decision themselves.

Asked in a chat app

3 links · 3 logins

Nothing is wrong with any of these tools. The problem is the seam between them: a chat app can only ever send you the address of the answer, and an address is correct right up until somebody moves the file.

Asked here

0 links · 0 logins

The room is in the same app as the work, so the reply isn't a link to the task — it is the task, with today's status on it. Nothing to open, nothing to keep in sync, nothing to re-share.

Slack and Teams sit on top of the tools your work lives in, so the best answer they can give you is an address. Rooms are in the same app as the work, so the answer is the work.

Four minutes, not thirty

The meeting this replaced is on the left.

Watch the invite lose its reasons to exist, one answered question at a time — and the whole thing take four minutes of the thirty it had booked.

Design is clear from the 9th. It's the QA window that's tight.

Locked: launch on the 14th, QA starts the 11th. Nothing else moves.

03The seams

Slack is excellent. That was never the question

Threads, huddles, clips, reactions, bookmarks, private channels — Slack does all of it, and does it well. The question is what it costs to have your conversation in a different building from your work.

One decision, across four tools (the messy way)

The answer exists. Six weeks later, that isn't the same as having it.

7 steps · 3 tools · 6 hand-offs

  • Booking a call to ask a question
  • Repeating it for whoever missed it
  • Writing up what was decided
  • Linking it to the work
  • Answering it again in six weeks

We're not trying to out-chat Slack. We're removing the hop between the answer and the thing it was about.

Conversation that stays next to the work

Two things a room does that a separate chat app charges you extra to almost do.

Four meetings a room quietly replaces

1The standup

Answered in four minutes, not thirty

Three people post what moved and what's blocked. The person who can unblock it reads it and does.

  • One room, posted when it's true rather than at 9:30
  • Blockers link straight to the task
  • Nobody sits through five updates that don't concern them
